Review

1. Purpose

The Review feature adds social proof right where it matters — at checkout. It shows star ratings and customer reviews to reassure shoppers about what they're buying at the exact moment they decide to complete the purchase. Reviews can be pulled automatically from your reviews app (Judge.me or Yotpo) or entered manually for full control.

There are two types of Review, depending on where you want it to appear:

  • Cart Line Review — a compact star rating shown under an individual cart line item.
  • Review block — a standalone block showing full review cards, placed anywhere in the checkout layout.

Both share the same source options (Manual or From app) and integrations, but differ in placement, display, and configuration. They are covered separately below.

2. Type A — Cart Line Review

2.1 What the Shopper Sees

Under a cart line item, the shopper sees a compact rating:

  • Star rating — 1–5 stars (filled gold, empty gray).
  • Review count — shown in parentheses when reviews are pulled from an app, e.g. (5 reviews).
  • Format — an inline row: ★★★★★ (5 reviews).

The rating only appears when review data exists for that product.

2.2 Where It Lives

Cart Line Review is one of the app's **per-line cart components**, added to a cart line in the checkout editor alongside Cartline Upsell, Auto Add to Cart, Badge, Controls, and Custom Text Line. It is tied to the product on that specific line.

2.3 How to Add It

  1. Open the Checkout editor in the app.
  2. Go to the cart summary section where cart line items are shown.
  3. On a cart line, click Add element.
  4. In the picker, choose Review.
  5. The block is added to the cart line with a placeholder rating.
  6. Click the block to open its configuration form.

Note: you can add one Cart Line Review per cart line.

2.4 Configuration

  • Block name — internal reference label. For internal reference only. Required.
  • Source modeManual or From app.
  • Manual — select a star rating (1–5) to display for that line.
  • From app — pick the Review source (Judge.me or Yotpo).
  • Rating filter (From app mode) — 5 star only or 4 or 5 stars.
  • Display — optional conditional visibility rules.

Help note in the form: "Please add the 'Cart line controls' block from the checkout editor's order summary section to enable this block."

3. Type B — Review Block

3.1 What the Shopper Sees

The Review block renders **full review cards**, each with:

  • Review title (bold)
  • Reviewer name
  • Review text
  • Star rating (1–5, gold)

Above the cards sits an optional heading (default "Trusted by our customers"). Cards can be arranged vertically (stacked) or as a horizontal, scrollable card layout, with optional borders.

3.2 Where It Lives

The Review block is a standalone block placed directly in the checkout layout via the Shopify Checkout Editor, using a Block ID. It is not tied to a single cart line — it shows a set of reviews wherever you position it.

3.3 How to Add It

  1. Configure the Review block in the app and note its Block ID.
  2. Open the Shopify Checkout Editor.
  3. Add the app block in the desired position and paste in the Block ID.

Help text: "Please insert the Block ID in the Shopify Checkout Editor. The final appearance will depend on the block's placement within the checkout layout."

3.4 Configuration

Includes all the source options from the Cart Line Review, plus:

  • Heading — section title (default "Trusted by our customers").
  • Source modeManual or From app.
  • Manual — add up to 12 reviews, each with a title, reviewer name, rating (1–5), and review text.
  • From app — pick the Review source (Judge.me or Yotpo) and a Rating filter (5 star only / 4 or 5 stars).
  • Selection criteria (From app mode) — which cart product's reviews to pull: First line item, Last line item, Least expensive, Most expensive, or Mixed line items.
  • Max reviews3, 6, 9, or 12 (default 3).
  • LayoutVertical (stacked) or Card (horizontal, scrollable).
  • BorderNone, Top, Bottom, Both, or All.
  • Block ID — paste into the Shopify Checkout Editor to position the block.

4. Review Sources (Both Types)

Each Review draws its content from one of two source modes:

  • Manual — you type the reviews yourself. Best for curated, hand-picked testimonials.
  • From app — reviews are fetched live from your connected reviews app.

Supported apps for *From app* mode:

  • Judge.me
  • Yotpo

If you pick an app that isn't connected, the form warns: "[App] integration is not enabled. To show reviews, go to Settings → Integrations and enable [App]."

5. Connecting a Reviews App (for "From app" mode)

Dynamic reviews require an integration enabled in Settings → Integrations:

  • Judge.me — install the Judge.me app, copy its Private API token, paste it into the Judge.me integration, and enable it.
  • Yotpo — install the Yotpo app; its app key is detected automatically. Just enable the Yotpo integration.

Once connected, reviews are fetched live per product and cached briefly for performance.

6. Common Use Cases

  • Reassure at the decision point — Cart Line Review puts a rating on each item right in the cart.
  • Dedicated social-proof section — the Review block showcases a set of testimonials in one place.
  • Curated testimonials — Manual mode lets you hand-pick your best reviews.
  • Automatic social proof — From app mode keeps reviews fresh without manual updates.
  • Show only your best — the rating filter displays only 4–5 star reviews.

7. Best Practices

  • Use Cart Line Review for per-item reassurance and the Review block for a standout testimonials section — they complement each other.
  • Filter to 4–5 stars for dynamic reviews so only strong social proof appears.
  • Keep manual reviews short and specific — a punchy title and one or two sentences read best.
  • Connect your reviews app once and let From app mode keep content current.
  • For the Review block, mind placement — appearance depends on where the Block ID is positioned in the checkout layout.
  • Verify the integration is enabled before publishing, or the block will have no data to show.

8. Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Selecting From app mode without enabling the integration — nothing shows until Judge.me/Yotpo is connected.
  • Adding more than one Cart Line Review per line — only one is supported per cart line.
  • Forgetting to paste the Block ID for the Review block — it won't render in the Shopify Checkout Editor.
  • Leaving manual reviews with empty fields — blank titles or text look unfinished.
  • No rating filter — unfiltered dynamic reviews may surface lower ratings.

9. Best Practices

No reviews showing: In Manual mode, confirm reviews are entered. In From app mode, confirm the integration is enabled in Settings → Integrations and that the product has reviews in the connected app.

Review block not appearing: Confirm the Block ID is pasted into the Shopify Checkout Editor and the block is positioned in the layout.

"Integration is not enabled" warning: Enable the selected source (Judge.me or Yotpo) under Settings → Integrations.

Reviews look outdated: Dynamic reviews are cached for performance and refresh shortly after; updating the app token forces a refresh.

Wrong product's reviews (Review block): Check the Selection criteria (First/Last/Least expensive/etc.). For Cart Line Review, reviews are tied to that line's product.

Low-rated reviews appearing: Set the Rating filter to 5 star only or 4 or 5 stars.

10. Summary

The Review feature brings star ratings and customer reviews into checkout in two forms: the Cart Line Review for compact per-item ratings, and the Review block for a full testimonials section placed via Block ID in the Shopify Checkout Editor. Both support Manual content or live reviews From app (Judge.me / Yotpo) with a rating filter to show only your best. Connect your reviews app once in Settings → Integrations, choose the type that fits the placement, and reinforce buyer confidence right where decisions are made.
